![]() | Aims - AIMS48D015 - 1:48 | Junkers Ju-88 early versions 9K+AL The subject - together to a lesser extent 9K+EL - of much photography 9K+AL Wk N. 3153 of 1./KG 51 prepares for a mission during the Battle of Britain from its base at Melun. 3153 is in standard RLM 70/71/65 but has the EZ-6 direction finder cover painted in a lighter colour like RLM 02 - 9K+EL has this same feature. Note also the spinners are in the Staffen colour of yellow whilst the white of 1 Gruppe adorns the radiator rim of the engines, obviously the Staffelkapitan had to have a more colourful aircraft for the propaganda day. 3153 carries full codes repeated under wings, note early position of tail insignia and no fuel triangles on side of cockpit. 9K+EL Details for Wk.N 3134 same as above although no Gruppe marking and beam MG 15 positions plated over. Left side view - Junkers Ju-88 vol 1, p 61, Classic, Right side view Luftwaffe At War Blitzkrieg in the West 39-42 p 33 3Z+BB Pilot Oblt. Siegward Fiebig was shot down in Wk N. 4136 becoming a POW with his crew after crash landing near Hertingfordbury after attacking the de Havilland factory at Hatfield where it was hit by AA. Only tail and upper left wing are seen in photos so style of codes, badge, presence of fuel triangle on cockpit as well as repetition of individual aircraft letter on nose and spinner tips in Stab colour - all as seen on other KG 77 machines of the time. Junkers Ju-88 vol 2, p 392, Classic. 3Z+HN Flown by Staffelkapitan Gunther Zetzsche Wk N. 7112 of 2./KG 77 was shot down by a Hurricane of 229 Sqn, coming down into the Channel 15 miles off Bexhill with all crew lost. An earlier photo of the machine shows no sign of the Wk N. on tail fin so might well be hidden from view on the nose of the cockpit. 7112 bears tactical markings on both sides of rudder and left wing only as per 3Z+BB as well as repetition of individual aircraft letter on upper wings - maybe nose also? Osprey No.17 Junkers Ju-88 Kampfgeschwader On the Western Front p. 4, 58 4D+IT Wk N. 2027 of 1./KG 30 piloted by Oblt. von Wartenberg -based at Oldenburg -was brought down by AA near Beek in Holland. The AA fire had killed radio operator Uffz. Weiss instantly, the rest of the crew were injured in the crash. 2027 carries its Wk N. on the engines, has full codes under the wings and along with the rest of 1. Staffel uses T instead of H to denote the 1st Staffen of 1. Gruppe. Im Focus No. 10, p 31-36 4D+DC This Stab machine was based at Gilze-Rijen with the rest of 2. KG 30 during the Battle of Britain. Wk N. sadly unknown and not carried on nose which would have helped. Spinners appear to be devoid of Stab colour. Cockpit carries both fuel and oil triangles in white outline style on left side of cockpit. Note RLM 70/71 demarcation is very low. Airdoc No. 2 Junkers Ju-88A/D p.23. B3+EL Whilst not seen due to angle of photo - photos exist of Junkers Ju-88A-1s during battle of Britain with the 2nd and 3rd Gruppen stripe as well as He 111's with 1st Gruppen stripe in white - as above - so it stands to reason Wk N. 4079 of 1./KG 54 also displays one. Note that the Wk N. is displayed on the nose of the cockpit and that manufacturers plate can be seen just below it as well as one or two white static markings. 4079 is seen running up its engines at its base in Evreaux. Note presence of Beetle Eye mounted MG 15. All other Ju-88s on this sheet have spinners in Staffen colour, 4079 and perhaps Stab. 2./KG 54 machine below have spinner in Gruppen colour instead. Luftwaffe At War, Blitzkrieg in the West p.35. B3+DC Oblt Welte of Stab. 2./KG 54 was forced down onto Portland Bill by a 213 Sqn Hurricane on the 11th Aug 1940. Wk N. not seen displayed on tail or nose. Note spinners have two white segments with a colour in-between lighter than back of spinner in its standard RLM 70. This is most likely red for Gruppen like with Wk N. 4079 above or a fancy way to lend more contrast to the Stab Green colour. White outline fuel triangle on right of Cockpit. Ju-88, Crowood, p 31. 4D+FH W Nr. 0133 Junkers Ju-88C-0 served with 1./KG 30 during the invasion of Norway flying from Vaernes. On the 20th May 1940 pilot Fw Eugen Kretschmer crashed landed it high up near Bj½rnefjell following engine trouble. Fw Eugen Kretschmer and BF Gefr Konstantin Erhardt were both captured unhurt, BS Obergefr Fritz Vogt escaped and returned to his unit on the 10th June. Apart from the individual aircraft letter F repeated in white on top of the wings 0133 is rather boring but of historical importance, note the early position of the tail national insignia.
